NMS Labs offers a chromium and cobalt test to help with the determination of metal exposure, such as in cases of patients who have been implanted with recalled metal hips. This test was built following the specifications requested in the recall testing. These specifications include ICP-MS methodology and a lower limit of detection.
Metal poisoning is a risk with metal hip implants due to their design. As the metal-on-metal components rub against each other, they can release cobalt and chromium into the tissues and bloodstream. Signs and symptoms of damage to the muscles, bones and nerves around the hip include pain, inflammation, tumors and difficulty walking. These symptoms may be delayed, which is why bio-monitoring is critical.
