Summary

• Summary / Impact Statement: Fentanyl is a prescription opioid used as an anesthetic/analgesic. It is reported to be 80 to 200 times as potent as morphine and has a rapid onset of action as well as addictive properties. Signs associated with fentanyl toxicity include severe respiratory depression, muscle rigidity, hypotension, coma, and death. Over 150 people die every day from overdoses related to synthetic opioids like fentanyl. In this study, trends in neonatal deaths were analyzed.
